Former Jackal Raul Valdes claimed by Yankees
Former Jackals’ southpaw Raul Valdes has been claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees and assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Valdes was designated for assignment by the St. Louis Cardinals on August 12.
The Cuban defector has spent the majority of the 2011 season with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, also appearing in seven games at the major league level for the Cardinals.
Valdes made his major league debut with the New York Mets in 2010, appearing in 38 games out of the Mets’ bullpen and going 3-3 with a 4.91 ERA. Valdes was also lights out with Triple-A Buffalo in 2010, posting a 3.00 ERA with a 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio while working primarily as a starter. With New Jersey in 2006, Valdes went 7-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 17 games (12 starts).
